  It's a love token. You'll find them on almost any 19th century denomination, including small gold coins, but dimes are most common. I believe this one says "Tess"

  Agree with Manifest.

  Technically, anything can be "hoboed" and carved. Traditionally nickels were used because they were decent sized, relatively easy to carve and cheap.

  I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

  I think that technically it was a pin or brooch, as evidenced by the solder remnants on the obverse.

  The term comes from a time when 'hobo's' - (homeless, traveling tramps) would carve images into the surface of nickels to pass the time. Now it has become an art form. Cheers, RickO

  Just acquired this from ebay. Pictures fro ebay also. Represented as a Hobo Peace Dollar. Reverse seems pretty accurate. Obverse not so sure. Any thoughts?

  I read somewhere that "hobo" comes from "hoe boy" since they would come to a home looking for a meal in exchange for doing work and the homeowner would frequently have them hoe the weeds in their garden.
