The 1941 that @ricko referred to is when it became a paid federal holiday.

Folklore has it that the origins of the 4th of July celebration stem from the war chronicles of General Washington. It was during a battle that the good General had seen enough, tossed his hat aside, took up a musket, and began blasting the advancing Red Coats. Having expended his supply of black powder and musket balls he then manned and torched off a field cannon loaded with grapeshot into an infantry company decimating its ranks. It was at this point that he fixed bayonet and charged the remaining rapscallions off the field in retreat and eventually out of the colonies entirely. It was his explosive war heroics that we honor and celebrate today.
