There are less than 100 known examples of the 1943 Irish halfcrown. The others are fairly scarce also.

That estimate is way too low. Probably more like 1000+.

That Auto dollar needs to be slabbed, if real. Major bucks, maybe 20k?

Auto dollar, birds over the junk? Maybe you could gently let him know even if he doesn't like slabs, getting slabbed will make his heirs less likely to make a costly mistake (or if he ever wanted to sell it could make them more liquid if he needed funds). Particularly for the rarities that are not so widely known as those two. That said, how cool is that collection! Nice you were able to visit with him.

Instead of this being a difficult post to write, I will start with thanking a Jerry for his service to our country.

I was around collecting 50 years ago. And instead of writing about my experiences with Chinese coins that date back to the 1970s, I really encourage Jerry to get the Auto Dollar graded just so it can be authenticated- And the same can be said for the Birds over Junk as well as some of the others posted or others that he just may happen to have.

Back in the day, these coins had a smaller following but there were some very well crafted counterfeits.

Best wishes Jerry should you choose to submit some of your coins

Those Chinese crowns need to be slabbed as they a worth a small fortune if real.
Any slabbed ones need to be stored in a safe deposit box. Too many bad things can happen these days. RSP

Several decades ago, the Chinese coins were quite a bit lower in value and more widely available. Types like the Auto Dollar and Birds Over Junk were always better types that commanded a premium. Their prices have increased by multiples of those older prices.

That is so cool! Glad he was able to realize some profits from his collection--sure to ease his retirement concerns (if he had any) but also validation on what an absolutely neat collection it is/was.
