The Monticello House has 7 steps and not 6, 5, or even 4. I learned tonight that my wife’s best friend Alex who is a part of the Monticello association (not foundation) claims that Thomas Jefferson is her 6th Great Grandfather. Anyway, she traveled their recently and shared this pic with us tonight.
That’s right count’em boys, 7.

Definitely seven steps... Are there any seven step nickels certified?? Probably a design issue that was overlooked. Cheers, RickO
Or maybe the original architect had a vision. Another interesting fact are the beds that are inset into the walls.
Brick steps were not part of the original construction and were added mid 19th century. It was most likely a dirt ramp or possibly wooden steps.
Me personally, I wouldn't count the landing as a step. You aren't stepping up anywhere from there, you've arrived at the next level.
That could be debated as that last step takes the same effort as the one before as well as it is a step higher than the step before.

I believe that the entire step area, including the area to the left and right of them was modified at one point during the lifetime of the building.
I do not, however, have solid proof of this. It's what I heard and could be rumor.

It is amazing how many collectors are "SUCKERS" for "just steps only" coins! Then again, they may haven't had any luck finding true full steppers. But those in the Registry who display their coins publicly.....they have been sitting on some but-ugly poorly struck nickels for years.....why is that? They collect labels!
But collect what you like/makes you happy....whatever floats your boat! lol

Those steps in the picture appear to be "full steps" too, lol!
Monticello appears to be very well struck in the image. If I was using a 1953-S nickel as my guide, I'd think I'm at the wrong building!

I didn’t think they had red brick homes in 1781 yet a quick search came up with 4400 BC. So originally they were made in China.
I plucked this one from an original roll and it graded 67 and I’m quite happy with it. If I remember correctly the price jumps about 29,000 for FS.
As a Jefferson collector do you think this one is graded accurately and what would be your overall take on the coin?

Looks good! If there were weaker hair and Mont. details, the steps would have filled out more. Nice MS67!
