Bust half error help

This is out of my depth -- I purchased the coin recently out of interest.

My best guess is that it's a cracked planchet + a lamination? The planchet crack extends to the reverse, through NIT in UNITED.

I think you hit the nail on the head. That’s how I would describe it. More generically it was struck on a defective planchet.
