Follow up on Acetone application to remove old tape on a coin

Hello. This is a word of thanks to everyone who offered help to me to get what I thought was tape on an otherwise decent Seated Liberty half dollar. Sadly, someone took a Brillo pad or something to it 😪 but now, the green gunky tape (or whatever it was) is gone and the remainder of the coin showed no ill-effects. The lighting is a bit different between the 2 photos but I think the improvement in the appearance of the coin is clear.

    The acetone appears to have done its job. The other is just unfortunate.

    It’s tough to see in your photos, but from what I can see, the coins appearance is much improved. Nice work!

    Gosh, Guys (Ladies???). I'm blushing. Thanks for the compliments on my cleaning job on the 1877S half. It really made the piece look a lot better. As BuffaloironTail said, "good things happen when people listen to good advice" i might add this, "good advice comes from good, helpful, smart people".

    I'm glad it worked out! Unfortunate about the harsh cleaning underneath, but I think you successfully stabilized the coin from any longterm damage the glue might cause on down the line.

    Put it in your pocket with some change for awhile. A few months should help to make than scrubbin' not so obvious.

    Hi, GaCoinGuy.

    Well, putting the seated half in a pocket full of change is a great idea to improve the "wear" look of the coin. The problem is, does ANYONE have a pocketful of change anymore? Here in NH, things were so bad recently with a shortage of coins that at one of my favorite stores, Job Lot, they would give a 40% premium gift card if I brought in rolls of coins. Well, occasionally, I get that ole' itch to search rolls of half dollars to see if, by some miracle, there were some silver halves (even 40%) ones. I found 1, but bringing $290 worth of rolled halves got me a gift card for $116. I'll watch for THAT promotion again. The bank is ever so happy to get rid of the halves to boot!! That's a win, win, win.😄

    Nice work removing the glue.... Acetone is great to remove organic deposits... and will not harm the metal or remove tarnish. Cheers, RickO
