I use to own one of if not the largest Misaligned Die (MAD) example on a US coin. I no longer own that coin.
I found this coin yesterday in a group of off center coins I was searching and said wow that 's a nice MAD. It is fun to cherrypick yourself 
Post a MAD coin if you have one. The larger the better.

Nice error
The 1971 FS-101 Doubled Die Obverse cent has a slightly misaligned obverse die. It is one of the diagnostics for the variety.
Serious question - why is it “MAD”
when standing for the words “misaligned” and “die”?

Is it commonplace to not ever change alignment until the die wears out?

Here is the most common one in the Large Cent series..1853 MAD. I have a crusty green one but I borrowed a picture of a nicer example.

Hmm. I'd probably call that an off-center with slight MAD on the obverse - the reverse has a thin strip of the rim that the obverse lacks.
Or vice versa. In either case, the dies don't seem perfectly aligned to each other.
I have never found one of these, though I have often seen them at shows and shops when I lived in the PNW. Interesting, and I would like one such as the 1971 DDO plus MAD... a twofer is cool. Cheers, RickO
Wow. One of the bigger MADs I've seen. Seems to be some weakness on the revese where unstruck portion of the obverse is.

I've always wondered if the DDO was discovered and that's why the die was taken out of service. Both obverse and reverse dies accumulated a lot of die scratches (I assume from polishing) as they progressed and I'm surprised the obverse wasn't realigned at some point during the polishing process. Not sure if it was a practice at the mint to perform polishing while the dies were still in the press.
I can say a dealer friend of mine and I bought a hoard of over 100 pieces accumulated in the 70's from mint bags and circulation, and all of them had the MAD.
