Signature collection for inbound registered mail – a myth or a reality?

Why do we pay so much more to send REGISTERED MAIL letter to or within the United States if the USPS does not collect signature of the recipient? in case of a dishonest recipient they can receive it and claim they've never received it. Will USPS be held responsible?

They do collect signatures at my house
I always have to sign for mail that is "Signature Required". I get irritated when I miss it and have to have it re-delivered. lol

My mailman never gets me to sign. Just puts it in the box. If my community wasn't gated and had heavy security I would have called his supervisor. The old Covid rules are gone...too lazy to walk to the front door. That's the USPS for you.
Your letter carrier is signing for you. If you ask him not to sign for you, he will stop and leave you a notice in your box and you can get the item at the post office the next day.
My concern is that there’s now an established pattern of you tacitly accepting such behavior. What happens if or when a package is lost or stolen?

I'm guessing that his gated, heavy security community has keyed mail boxes similar to those at the post office in various locations. However, I do recall in the old days I still had to go to the window to pick registered mail addressed to my P.O. Box.
In over 40 years of receiving Registered Mail (and hundreds of packages), I've always had to sign.

@RemoteTom... Welcome aboard. I have often shipped Registered Mail, Signature Required. Aside from temporary Covid rules (now supposedly eliminated), I would expect the rule to be enforced. If it is not, contact the Post Master. Cheers, RickO
This.
When the COVID rules ended, I had the same issue. A friendly chat with the carrier corrected the situation.
This has nothing to do with U.S. Coins.
