Ugh, a ruined 1819 capped bust half

Just picked this up in a small collection.
When I get these 200+ year coins I always wonder when was the holed drilled and then when was the holed filled. I can’t even tell if there was a mint mark.

Anyone else, and I am sure there are, have coins that were ruined with holes?

    Those did not have mint marks. A few of the very late dates of the series did have mint marks but not the 1819.

    Well, you needn't worry about a mintmark on that one! Half dollars didn't have a mintmark until 1838 with the Reeded Edge 1838-O proof (specimen) only issues and regular issues didn't have a mintmark until the RE 1839-O coinage. Those all appeared on the obverse. Reverse mintmarks on half dollars didn't appear until the Seated Liberty design in 1840.

    Still not a terrible looking entry bust half dollar. These can come extremely ugly but can also be found attractive. Just be patient for the right example.

    Looks like Ms. Liberty had a migraine.... ;) There are many more people that do not collect coins, than collectors. There are reasons for holes in coins, jewelry, good luck - common practice to nail to a door frame. Non-collectors just see the need for the hole and do not consider the coin. Cheers, RickO
