Theme for my camera club's January competition is family heirlooms. I combined hobbies for this submission, titled Grandma's Coin Collection. The mesh purse at least did belong to my wife's grandmother. (No coins were harmed in making this photo.)

Sao Bras de Alportel sunrise this morning.

Currently one of the ex-libris of São Brás de Alportel, the “Calçadinha” of São Brás de Alportel would be a route that would integrate the Roman road network. It started from the city of Ossonoba (Faro), headed north, passing through the Roman villas of Milreu (Faro) and Vale do Joio (S. Brás/ Faro) and whose archaeological remains can be found along two sections of unique interest .

Multimedia1This ancient path seems to have its origins in Roman times. Associated with segments of its probable original structure, there are also renovations from the 19th century, probably ordered by Bishop D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar. During the Roman occupation, this route left the city of Ossonoba (Faro) and headed north, passing through the Roman villas of Milreu (Faro) and Vale do Joio (S. Brás/ Faro).

Paving was applied, to overcome natural obstacles, in areas of steep slopes with difficult to navigate and irregular soils that would be easily altered by torrents of rainwater or other erosive agents.
Two sections remain, called A and B, separated by a few meters that were once paved, but are now damaged.

The recommendations of the aforementioned Bishop for the construction of roads were identified, above all, in Section A and are characterized by the geometric paving made up of small/medium sized stones and a central axis delimited by cutlass stones (margines), from which lines emerge perpendicular lines that form squares, obliquely divided into right triangles.

The technical characteristics described above are visible in some segments of Section B, but the peculiarity of this one lies in what remains of the construction used, similar to that of the Roman sidewalks, noting the existence of a medium/large-sized flagstone.

Near this road, archaeological remains from the Roman period (ends of the 1st to 4th-5th centuries AD) were discovered, which can be interpreted as a road station (mutatio), a small facility intended for resting and supplying travelers and/or changing cavalry in the course of travel.
