Congress Awards Highest Honor to Officers Who Protected the Capitol on Jan. 6 2021

US Mint Capitol Attack medal

The obverse design features the United States Capitol building and a flag at half-staff, with the windows of the Capitol Rotunda around the border.

The reverse design depicts an American flag along with the service badges of the United States Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police District of Columbia, which both include the years of their creation.

I noticed the news articles yesterday. The gold medals look massive and you can really see how warm the gold looks in photos. The Capitol building shot is taken from NPR and the shields and flag shot from KKTV-

One glaring error to me is the term "Congressional Medal of Honor". There is no such thing.

There is the Medal of Honor.

There is also a Congressional Medal of Honor Society. That is a Congressionally chartered Society organized to honor MOH recipients.

This was clarified for me previously by the CMOHS.

Different medal.

The Congressional Gold Medal has nothing to do with the military Medal of Honor.

Simple, elegant design.
It would be nice to see them sell a half ounce or 1 ounce gold version.

There is an assumption that everyone honored gets a three inch gold medal.
The US Mint strikes one gold medal which is sent to the Smithsonian Museum.

US Mint bronze restrikes are sold to the public.

So, the chaps that let the "protesters" in, get rewarded? The protesters were welcomed by some who stood aside when the breech occurred. I don't understand the valor part.

A nice gesture, but an expensive one. The mint medals saw a huge jump in price a year or two ago.

What's political about this medal? It's the highest honor that can be awarded by the Congress. In this case, it was awarded to those officers who defended against an attack on the institution that awards the medal. Seems like it makes perfect sense.

Edit to add: If this medal is political, every other Congressional Gold Medal awarded going back to the Revolutionary War was political. That doesn't make it any less significant.
