Got to admire this and other hunks of German silver while visiting my brother last weekend. My phone was only able to capture a fraction of this coin's eye-appeal, but wanted to share it anyway.

He sure does - he's into Germany and collects by Davenport numbers. I think he has some of his sets at NGC under TalerManiac. He's also the reason I got interested in coins as a kid. I remember doing pencil rubbings of his coins back when I was little (he's 14 years older) and thinking it was the greatest thing ever.

BTW, @TwoKopeiki, I think it is very cool that your brother collects coins. Mine (also older) used to do so when we were young but never as seriously as I have since become. He used to have rolls of circ Morgan Dollars, preferring the commodity aspect of coins.

2K - Maybe you have mentioned it here on the forum but I never made the connection between you and TalerManiac. That is very cool. Is the 3T piece in his collection? The sheer size of those are amazing. I would love to see a 4T, 5T, or larger in person some day. Maybe my memory is failing me, but I recall seeing two older sede vacante talers in his collection in years past but I do not see them anymore. Maybe I am confusing his set with a different set?
I would love to someday add a 1.5T, 2T, or 3T to the collection from one of the Brunswick states. I came close a few times but only have second place bidding results to show for it. Out of reach for now but maybe some day.....

A quick look at the census of either NGC or PCGS illustrates the scarcity of these multiple talers.
NGC:
Of the 70,881 total German coins graded; the total population of talers is as follows:
- 1 taler: 4,161 graded
- 1.25 taler: 15 graded
- 1.5 taler: 31 graded
- 2 taler: 169 graded
- 3 taler: 33 graded
- 4 taler: 9 graded
- 5 taler: 8 graded
- 6 taler: 1 graded
- 10 taler: 1 graded
Does anybody know how to view the total population at PCGS (without going into each of the individual german states links)?
So we have 3 of the 33 total graded 3T pieces in this thread!

Good point EVP. They make you work a bit more to get the numbers on the details pieces.....1.5, 5, 6, and 10T did not have any detail grades noted.
My one multi, never get my gazes fill of looking at it!

Love the design on that 2T!
The 3T and a corresponding 1.5T are his recent additions, I believe. I don't follow his sets as closely as I probably should. I will ask him about the Sede Vacante pieces next time we chat.

raw. Several years ago Don Kagin had a
10 Taler piece at his table. He noticed my
interest and he took out the coin for me
to inspect. It weighed approximately what
10 Morgan dollars would. A fond memory
for me.
Can someone summarize the reason for
the Loser's .
Mine are raw.
Loeser (oe = German ‘o’ with umlaut) was used as bullion reserve by the nobility to be redeemed in times of conflict.

This one will be in hand soon from Heritage; this purchase has been years in the making. The planchet is substantial at 87mm with a weight of 116.3 gm. I will have to post another picture when it arrives next to a normal NGC holder for perspective. This is one of the 10 total 4T graded by NGC & PCGS combined.
It was struck to celebrate the 88th birthday of Augustus II (The Younger), Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg on April 10th. The celebration was timely, as he passed away 5 months later on Sept 17th. He was succeeded by his eldest son Rudolph Augustus.

I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this NEWP, which arrived today. As you can tell - it's a BIG coin!
It's a 1 1/2 Taler, weighing 43 grams and 55mm in diameter - a Morgan dollar weighs "only" 26.7 grams, and is about 38mm! The coin is from the Preussag collection, which you can read about here and where you can also see some other great examples of multiple talers in the catalog.
This was a big purchase for me and I was very happy to see how this turned out in hand:

It looks like we were both on the hunt in the same Kunker auction this past fall. Interesting timing of your post because I just learned the same day that the 2T I purchased made it through the NGC grading process in an AU-55 holder and the Preussag collection pedigree was recognized on the insert. I'm pretty excited about this one. DAV-LS87C struck a few years after his death by Julius Philipp Eisendraht, who worked under Rudolph August in Zellerfeld from 1672 to 1675. 66mm, 56.69g.

The coin I acquired was in their eLive auction just a couple weeks ago. I'm very happy with it, though it seems like quite a few of these Preussag pieces are now coming back to the market.
I want to get my slabbed, but I am really enjoying holding and examining such a big coin!
