A Rare Accomplishment....(For me).

Long time member here, who has been inactive for awhile. Forgive me for stepping back in just to toot a horn. But....
I actually finished a set!
I start many sets, even knowing I probably won't finish them. I have an issue spending the required funds for those damn key dates. 
I started the Walking Liberties in March 2000, with a Teletrade(!) purchase of a 1944 in MS-64. My intent at the time was just having a nice type set example....in my limited budget. While it would have been easy and cheap to upgrade, I still have it for sentimental reasons. (And, it does actually look pretty nice for a 64).
That coin led me to start a "short set" of late date Walkers, mostly in 64 as well. Not sure I ever finished that by the time I decided to complete the WHOLE set. It was a long slog through the 65 coin set, as well as upgrading a fair number of those MS-64 coins along the way. At one point, i did have a 1938-D in XF-45, but I didn't like it. To my eye, that 45 grade was a gift given to a barely XF-40 coin. So I sold it, just SURE it would be easy to replace.
It took me forever to find a 38-D I actually liked. Anyone working a Walker set knows that you can find an MS-65 (expensive!) easier that you can find a nice AU! Time went by, and I finished every single other coin in the set, with an acceptable coin to my eye....except for the 1938-D. But a week ago, I finally found this on Great Collections:
So, I'm now the proud owner of the #38 ranked set of walkers. Okay...that's not all that impressive given that there is a 60% complete set that far outranks me.... But for my budget and goals, I'm going to be proud anyway.

Toot away, @TommyType! Completion of a set is reason to celebrate. I was thrilled when I completed by State Quarters from circulation - thats' nothing compared to what you've accomplished. Every set takes work and effort. Enjoy it, and be proud - you deserve it!
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

And I wanted to follow up on my claim that it's easier to find an MS-65 than a good looking AU. (I shouldn't assume MY experience is reality).
Turns out....I'm probably right!
Using the PCGS pop report, I see that there are 974 1938-D certified MS-65. Call it somewhat less, considering re-submissions, and assume 850-900??
In the grades AU-50 to AU-58, in total there are 478 certified coins....not taking into account which are actually "good looking".
Tough little coin, I would say....

Ironically, the ‘38D is one of two coins that I need to finish my set.
For many years, I considered that date over rated and over priced in mint state, and I still do. I was more than happy to occupy the spot with my AU53.
But a few years ago I decided that I should upgrade it to get it more in line with the rest of the middle and late dates in my set, plus it is easy registry points.
So when a forum member friend contacted me looking for one in AU this past year, it was an easy decision to sell him mine.

Great job on finishing your Walker set. I myself have not completed a set that has more than 6 or 7 coins in it. One day I hope to finish my Basic U.S. Type set (54 coins) and I'm sure I will be just as proud as you are today.

Congrats on completing a set. The walking liberty half is one of my favorite designs. If you open the set up under the everyman title it looks like your set would take the #4 seat.
Bet that feels good to complete. As far as your ranking, who cares right? I've never seen having a registry set being a competition with fellow collectors who often seek points over condition/eye appeal. Besides, who needs the associated stress in a relaxing hobby? Maybe if I had the big bucks I'd see it differently. Well done!
