1917 buffalo nickel, a nice early die state coin

What a nice 1917 nickel this is! I compared it to other pcgs slabbed 1917-P nickels of the same and higher grades and this one looks better. Of course it is difficult to grade a coin just from the photos but this one seems to have it all.

The coin has knockout surfaces. it's a good example for what a Buffalo Nickel should look like.

Looks great on the TV.
The coin looks too good to be just a 63. What's wrong with it? It's got a few marks on Black Diamond, but that's about it.
I'm thinking 65.

Pete . . . I was scrolling down getting ready to post, and agreed with you with one slight exception. The coin, although simply superb, seemed by the pics to lack a bit in the luster department. I was wondering also why it was not 65/66 and that was the only reason I could imagine . . .

I have a pcgs ms64 1937 buffalo nickel that pcgs graded ms64. I was absolutely shocked when I got this one back.
This stuff probably happens often me thinks.

63 looks about right to me and it is a nice 63 IMO. Lots of "stuff" going on in the high areas. The die crack across the cheek is kind of cool though, you can see the other end of it in the hair.

This one just graded 64 for comparison.
I suspect the 63 reflects what appears to be less than full luster.

I love the strike on this 1917 and the die crack adds a lot of interest to it for me. Personally, I would rather have a 63 with muted luster and details like this than a flashy marked up mushy one. Great choice! I as others have stated, still don't understand how this one could be relegated to a 63, looks like a 64+/65 to me. I think they were very tough on this one.
