1937d 3 legged and 3 and 1/2 legged buffalo reverses

BUFFNIXXBUFFNIXX Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here are two different die states of the 37d 3 legged buffalo nickel.
earlier die state should be called 3 and one half legged because part of the leg still shows....
but on the later die state call it the three legged cause the leg is completely gone.

I think the powers that be don't want to go with 3 1/2 legger because there's already one of those for 1936 D (although very rare).

Just for comparison here is the reverse of a 1936d 3 and one half legger.
The coin shown below has more of the leg showing than the 3 legger above.
    Go figure!

Daves DCW once had a pre-3 Leg for sale. It supposedly had the diagnostics, although I don't know what they are.

It’s surprising that the rear leg on the early die state looks more “moth eaten “ than the late die state.

The '36-D "3 & 1/2 leg" is a rare one. But of course the '37-D 3-legger is better known. I don't have an example of either, but if looking to buy, I'd want the '37-D, and hope to cherrypick the '36-D.

  • The 3 1/2 legged picture is not the same die as the 3 legged buffalo for 1937-D.

I think you're correct. You can see the difference in spacing of the motto from the buffalo's back. Like Walkerguy said, the back leg on the 3 legger has more detail than the 3 1/2 legger.....

Judging from the mintmark positions on the two coins, those are 2 different dies.

Not since the Hindenburg disaster have we seen such a colossal font size used for a news headline.

It is an old thread, but it did take 3 1/2 years to correct it.

But the "pissing buffalo" and the moth-eaten hind leg are still there.

@BUFFNIXX, does PCGS still consider the "3 1/2 Legger" a 3 Legs Buffalo?
