1867 US Proof set struck in copper

This will be auctioned next month in Europe MDC Monaco..
Way outta my league at a starting bid of 200K Euro, but so damn cool!
Disappointing the half is missing, it would be fascinating to hear the entire story of its history!
Hopefully someone here discovers it and perhaps it will return to the US….

    If you check out the auction at the website you can read what they think may have brought the coins to Europe…they are all graded by NGC from PF63RB to PF67RB

    That's a great item. 5 sets struck. Garrett had one, which was sold in 1976. Another double set was apparently stolen from the Iowa State Historical Museum. This set makes four. And another set, presumably broken up, makes five. I would have already booked my flight to Monaco if not for the 200K opening bid.

    Most of these presentation sets were specifically made for and presented to foreign dignitaries. The king of Siam set is a more famous example.
    There are several of these struck in aluminum dated 1868 that were presented to European heads of state. I’m assuming this one from 1867 in copper was produced for the same reason.
