I will watch to see how high they go. I don’t own any and find these interesting. Don’t really care about the low numbered ones.

They are very nice coins. That being said, there will be initial hype and flipping fever. I do not foresee any lasting potential outside of a niche collector market. Cheers, RickO

Special , like Special Ed. Slow to move ... slow to learn. On the flip side, I love that S&B will get paid for getting rid of the "leftovers". Sorry if that reads cold , callous, mean or rude. It is to our benefit

  • Any guess as to what the actual first strike ASE or AGE will bring?

FWIW, SBG is "waiving" the buyer's premium on these items. Reference

I too will be interested in how they do. Crazy with no difference between them and an unslabbed or designated piece.

Seems like they will appeal to the same folks who buy advance release. Zero difference other than the ego trip of saying “I had it first “
Twice the price to have something certified as being available a week earlier than the commoners. 😁
Collect what you like, as they say 😉🦫🙀

They are “special” right now. I can’t see how any of these will hold their premium in years to come. Expensive bragging rights for sure. It will be interesting to follow.

I am a hard pass. Just a way to sell super inflated coins and raise money.

Its just bullion to me. Bullion is bullion and nothing will change that.

As of right now (lot #26 is "live"):

~ the last, and first ASE are at $25,000 each (lots 77 and 78):
~ the last and first AGE are at $19,000 each (lots 79 and 80).

I will watch what the 4 coin sets actually end up at. Many sets of 4 coins are well under $4000 right now. Melt is around $3500 at today's spot.

    I am not bidding either.

That said, I am watching the results with interest. :)

Say what you want but what if you could own the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Saint or Walker or SLQ or CHB minted. There is a lot of money out there.

Not everybody is an investor. Some people collect coins because they enjoy owning them.

  • TxCollectorTxCollector Posts: 446 ✭✭✭✭

People pay a lot for low serial numbers for currency so this doesn’t seem materially different to me.

  • foraiurforaiur Posts: 134 ✭✭✭

The 77k-100k paid for the last & first seems reasonable and a good investment. These have actual historical value and will likely end up somewhere like the Smithsonian years from now. 18k for the 4th ASE or whatever premium the 491st to last goes for...I'd say not so much.

  • Currency actually has a number on the bill itself. Take the coin out of these special holders and they're just like any other ASE or AGE.

  • foraiurforaiur Posts: 134 ✭✭✭

The provenance is unimpeachable here. For the actual historical pieces it becomes like the otherwise plain baseball hit for an important homerun or the jersey worn during a major event.

Agree with that assessment. So this is the exception to the rule of “buy the coin and not the holder” lol.

I count 6, but very good guess without hindsight.

Nobody held a gun to anybody's head here. If that's what the bidder is willing to pay, what's the problem?

  • GoldminersGoldminers Posts: 4,262 ✭✭✭✭✭

So far these are NGC results. The PCGS coins are still in line for the live auction.

I also notice many of the upcoming PCGS 4-coin sets have a 69, and even some 68's. A detailed comparison of the grades assigned between the services and associated struck numbered sequence would be interesting.

Did the winning bidder have the same idea as the person that bought the very first 2014 gold Kennedy at ANA for $100,000?

  • pcgscacgoldpcgscacgold Posts: 2,943 ✭✭✭✭✭

I knew these would be popular but what amazing prices. Great pieces of history. Pretty cool to own the first ever Silver Eagle or Gold Eagle struck. A coin to be proud to own. There are a lot of collectors out there and they have money.

  • erscoloerscolo Posts: 657 ✭✭✭✭✭

They are exactly the same as any other silver or gold eagle minted by the government. The hoopla is all about the label.

I don't get it......I just talked with my 2021 Silver Eagle and she told me "she" was the first off the press.

If the US Mint ever starts selling thimbles, ceramic plates and chess sets; we’ll know who stole the Franklin Mint playbook. I could only laugh when the state quarters started in 1999; same idea as FM except now they were real money.

The Philadelphia Mint: making coins since 1792. We make money by making money. Now in our 225th year thanks to no competition. image

My observations on the Single coin lots (First 200 lots) of the Stacks Bowers Auction at Dusk and at Dawn.

NGC graded 1 ASE coin MS67
    NGC graded 5 ASE’s MS68
    NGC graded 74 ASE’s MS69
    NGC graded 20 ASE’s MS70

Mean for the 100 American Silver Eagles was $4,628.50 (Skewed Heavily by the $85k and $80k coins).
Median for the 100 American Silver Eagles was $2,000.00

    NGC graded 5 AGE’s MS69 (All Type 2)
    NGC graded 95 AGE’s MS70

Mean for the 100 American Gold Eagles was $6,397.50 (Skewed Heavily by the $100k and $77.5k coins)
Median for the 100 American Gold Eagles was $4,000.00

2 unique coins or 37 virtually identical ones? Interesting.

So, you're telling me it is better to have 200,000 2021 ASEs than one 1804 dollars?
