ANA show report from a rare gold collector

I spent most of the day Wednesday at the show. I have been to several at Rosemont, so I had my routine down pretty well. Arrive just before 10, park at the train station ($7), and a short walk to the the convention center. I packed a small lunch in a backpack, as several here recommended, and hit the floor just after opening.
I had little expectations of buying much, as my wantlist is pretty specific and I had not seen what I was looking for in any dealer inventory ahead of time. My main goal was to head for the auction lot viewing and see some of the many gold dollars coming up for sale. This hot market has brought out more better date gold dollars than I have seen in many years. Between Stacks, Heritage, and GC there were five 1861-D gold dollars up for auction, and two more coming in Setember. Unheard of! Not that I will ever be able to afford one, but it is great fun to look! It is extremely educational to view a large number of coins in your specific series, to learn how they are graded and how each issue varies by strike, color, and luster. I always end up feeling pretty good about the coins in my collection after comparing to others. Plus, it helps me target any coins I would like to target as upgrades.
I have never submitted coins to CAC but am planning a submission soon, so I wanted to get a feel for how some of those compare to mine. One surprise was that lot viewing was in a hotell a couple of blocks from the convention center.
I did see a couple of nice, better grade, gold dollars that I had not seen in dealer inventories before the show. They were priced very, very optimistically. Most of the dealers I spoke with were planning on taking their show newps back home with them and posting to their website. As in the past, this is mainly a dealer to dealer trading show.
So no purchases for me, but I met a couple old friends and introduced myself to a couple new dealers that had nice coins. If they don't sell them at their intial high prices, I will check back.

Thanks for the report and your insights into your particular numismatic niche.
@liefgold ... Thank you for the show report. Was the rest of the gold market similar to your area of interest? Melt price is down, I would expect to see some activity in that sector. Cheers, RickO
Good luck, have fun

Thanks for a very enjoyable read, particularly the $7 train station parking tip! I knew nothing about $1 gold before, but your comments about 1861-D sent me to the Red Book and Heritage auction archives. Wow!
