First ever half dollar coin box yielded a 40% silver and maybe a proof?

I just did my first ever coin hunt and was rewarded with 1 40% silver coin. And what might be a proof or at least a really nice condition 1971. If u know if it is plz lmk. Im not sure how to tell if a coin is a proof tbh. It looks different than all the other ones. Just throwin it out there. U can still find silver in circulation in 2022. I didnt find any 2002 -present

    The 1971 is not a proof..... looks like a D mint mark. ;)

    Thanks. Better than nothing. I was pretty happy. It was like the first roll i opened so i thought thered b more lol. I actually just unfurled one side so i could quickly put em back in the wraps. How do u know if a coin is a proof? Just a high relief or cameo? It must just be in really good shape. None of the others looked like it. Even the really nice ones.

    tbh, the best answer i think is, get a redbook. proofs come in all shapes and sizes to i doubt there is really one sentence that could encompass a description of them all, especially with prooflikes and deep mirror PL out there. some years have no proofs or some do have S on business strikes.

    if you pull UNC halves like the 71-d, they'd be worth putting aside, especially in quantity and you could put up em on the bay and make a bit of money and put it back into getting more rolls.

    Buy the Red Book, it will help more than you could possibly know at this point. You can get it on Amazon, at any coin dealer shop, through all the major book retail establishments and it only costs $15 or $20 and you only need to buy it once or once every half decade or so.

    Hey Mark,
    I'm new to the board and collecting. How do you post questions?
    I purchased rolls of quarters (14) from my local bank.....all in Loomis Rolls. When I got home and after opening 3 rolls, I have 14 rolls of uncirculated Sally Ride Quarters.
    Should I keep all of them or are there other suggestions?

    Heres the 1971-D i dont think theres anything unusual about it. next time i go thru a box i will pay close attention to that area. I was looking for DD or anything cool and unusual but didnt look at the trust as much. I have a picture of one of those coin mats with all the key dates tho

    Lots of folks would argue with me, but I would suggest to largely ignore looking for minor varieties and stick with searching for either silver or major varieties. In general, things that are tough to see on a coin are equally tough to sell and your time has to be worth something.

    I think thats a good idea. What is the best coin hunt u guys have ever done? Ive heard of someone finding 30 walking liberty halves in a box! At my bank im the only person that orders boxes of coins so that is good. I will do it again. Its like gambling except u cant lose.

    @DanM55 ... Always nice to find silver, especially in half dollar size. They are out there, but rarely in any quantity. Unless you are lucky to hit a disposition by a collectors heirs that knew nothing about the coins - it happens. Maybe once in three lifetimes... :D;) Cheers, RickO
