A Warning Worth Repeating

MWallaceMWallace Posts: 4,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

This was posted on this board many years ago. Instead of trying to find it, I'll just repeat it here. I don't recall the OP but this is good advice.

When taking coin photos with your phone's camera, be sure to turn off the location, especially if taken at home. Otherwise the GPS location is embedded in the photo.

Yep. One of my friends posted something and I sent him the geo-coords. Turns out it's not HIS house, he was at a friend's... in the front bedroom to the right of the garage taking pics for his IG feed.

I believe the software here scrubs the info though. Still good advice regardless. 👍

If Geotagging is enabled on your phone camera or camera, wherever that photo was taken the latitude and longitudinal coordinates are assigned to that photo. And at that point you can find out just about anything you want about that location and who lives there.
Hikers use it for social media to let others know of undiscovered secluded spots in nature. Then everyone comes and disturbs the undiscovered area.
I heard some hacks can get geolocations just from a post, such as on Instagram.

Thanks for the reminder. I just double checked and my camera doesn't have access. 👍

Well, that sucks. How do you tell the coordinates from a photo on this forum? I mean where do you find them?
    Did not know this.

looks like the default setting on apple iphone is "never", so if you haven't manually changed the setting you are safe, but best check anyhow.

Occasionally your phone will "auto update", sometimes without your knowledge or permission. It's a good idea to check these setting every so often, since they can reset to default after such updates.

Thanks for the tip, but you almost gave me a heart attack. Fortunately when I checked my phone's camera location setting was turned off.
