On buying coins with terrible pictures, how about good pictures of terrible holders?

ChrisH821ChrisH821 Posts: 7,141 ✭✭✭✭✭

I saw this one on the bay, the color looked attractive and 'seems' to have a good strike. I had a 5% bucks offer and about $75 in available ebay bucks so I went for it on somewhat of a gamble.
Here's the issue- Looks like someone stored it with their gravel. The holder has been through absolute hell.
Seller pics:

I am working on polishing out the scratches, but I don't think I'll get them all out. Now that I can see the coin in there it's actually very nice looking. I think I did well with this one.
Will get some updated pics shortly.

I know it’s an “OGH” so this will be anathema to some, but I’d definitely send it for a reholder if it were mine.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Oh I probably will, but until then getting the scratches mostly polished out will do.

I went straight to 2000 grit hoping it would cut enough, It did pretty well but I'll have to hit it with some 600 or 800 first to get the deeper ones. The deepest scratch is over the hair and parallel to the feather.

I've had good results using Plastix polish, works slowly to reduce fine scratches. You're doing well so far. Good luck. Peace Roy

Nice looking Buff in your pictures after scratch removal. Normally I would not bother with slab rework, but in that case, it seems worth it. Cheers, RickO

Just about any scratch can be buffed out if you spend the time on it.

Nice coin and purchase! If I recall the price, I think you got a nice discount for the cruddy holder.

I saw it and almost pulled the trigger but I would have to re-holder and just didn't want to make the time commitment. That seller's prices are full retail but fantastic service and people. I highly recommend them.

Trashed holders chap my hide. If I'm looking at a coin in a dealer's inventory, I can forgive a few minor abrasions, but if I can't see the coin and you're asking retail plus fashionable upcharge of the day, I lose a lot of respect for them.

Nice pickup, and at a discount with the eBay bucks. The holder is greatly improved. I'd leave it in and work on it some more.

That was the seller, yes. After ebay bucks voucher, and if you count the 5% that isn't realized yet, the total was under $600 which puts it at the very low end of recent MS66 prices.

Sorry for the useless bump here, but for posterity here is the before and after of the holder.

PCGS holders are easy to remove scratches from. One thousand, 2,000, 3,000 (if you can get it, then PlastX. Just don't generate heat by using anything but elbow grease. NGC Holders are not as easy. That's a big window there.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

This one was awful. Sent it in for a reholder and thought, hell, I might as well have it regraded too. Sigh.
