i bet the toner is quite pretty in-hand.
for some reason, it always fascinates me to see proof dies abraded to the point of design element removal.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I'm just asking a question, not being critical.......let's get that out of the way.
Do these coins look better in-hand? Because I'm just not impressed with their pictures. Is it just difficult to taken pictures of proof coins? Are these dark area just in the pictures?

@OAKSTAR the areas you are pointing to just look like reflections to me. On some coins the light is such that it brings out the toning, on others such that it brings out reflectivity. There will almost always be areas on a proof that look black in photos because of the way light is reflecting.
Collector, occasional seller
That is an exceptional reverse on the 1940. The obverse is well above average as well, and I think that coin is by quite a ways the best of the group as far as I would want in my collection. There aren't many as detailed out there!

The images have dark spots when the light hits the brilliant devices. That created what you are pointing out. The spots would likely be mirrored in hand.
Coin Photography
The 1940 dime has the best strike and best detail of the four coins.
The grades for the coins are:
1939 - PF64
1940 - PF67
1941 - PF65
1942 - PF66
In the photo and in hand the 1941 is gorgeous (but it does have flaws on the cheek and in the right obverse fields which limit the grade).
In hand the 1940 looks very nice, with both the obverse and reverse devices having some frost on same. It has a Cameo appearance but is nowhere close to warranting a CAM designation. It also has attractive rim toning.

Great looking proofs! The '39 appears to have a saddle nose deformity (google it)
Coming soon (maybe tomorrow) I will posts photos of the 1939 - 1942 half dollars, quarters and nickels that go with these dimes.
The cents will have to wait until Trueviews of them post.
