Old cistern at old farm, colonial buckle find

Permission to detect a ©1725 farm in NJ lead to the discovery of a large domed stone cistern on the wooded grounds. Approx. 40' in circumference, 30' deep. Has about 2' of water in it. Gonna suck it dry with a sump pump and a generator. On a lighter note, I dug a large ornate copper or brass buckle nearby. The chape has rusted away. Only got stung once and the ticks are legion. More to follow. Enjoy, the hunt continues. Peace Roy

Buckle cleaned up nicely. No makers mark. Have a good day.

@Namvet69 ... Watch out for those ticks Roy... Lime disease is nothing to mess with. Nice buckle.... might be more at the bottom of the cistern. Will be tricky getting stuff out. Cheers, RickO

  • Cracking buckle well done 👍

I had a thought about trying to bring stuff up from an old well or cistern and would like to run it by folks. Could you drop some steel washers down there, let them sit for a few days and then, maybe after a rain, lower one of the powerful magnets that are used for magnet fishing down. If the washers made their way underneath anything laying down there the magnet would probably pick it and the "goodie" also and could be retried with the attached rope.

Perhaps the washers would just sit on top and not get under anything or perhaps there are old nails of bits of metal already down there that could be brought up by the magnet. Most of the good ones can pick up items weighing up to 500 or 600 pounds and that might be an interesting find.

@Klif50 .... There are dedicated magnet fishers with those powerful magnets. However, in wells, the real treasures are likely to be non magnetic (i.e. gold, silver, copper). Cheers, RickO
