1878 and 1890 Morgan Dollar Grades

Please help with an estimated grade for the two Morgan examples. These are raw and have never been certified.

    Nice ones! I'll take a stab at it, though I don't know this series super well...
    for the 1878 I'd say no higher than 64, the reverse is almost flawless except for 2 tiny marks, but the obverse has a fair number of little marks and divots that would keep the grade down a couple notches imo...
    the 1890 appears to have more luster and a stronger strike but it has also has quite a few bag marks, and some chatter on the face and in the obverse fields, I'd say 64+ on that one...
    Again, I don't know this series too well, maybe I'm being too harsh on them, I'm interested to see what the experts have to say :)
    Also, they'd probably get a grade bump because they are CC's...

    The lighting makes it a little tougher to figure and of course not knowing the photo style should I say. The actual luster is not known so assuming normal cc luster which is typically good or better.
    Agree with the 64 on 78. The 90cc obverse I am assuming that the field marks at 9 o/c are not as bad as they appear as the light is bright on them. Also two cuts, one on the jaw is heavier and the one in front of the ear appears as if it might continue into or onto the ear. If so it might be kind of large but can't determine depth and stuff. Maybe 63.

    Thanks for the inputs. All seem to be pretty consistent. I was evaluating an inherited collection for a friend and these two have the highest value potential so I wanted confirmation.

    I agree with the assessments. These are the highlights of the material that I have reviewed so far. I figured that neither would exceed a 64 on their best day, but there is such a step up in value to 65 that I wanted to make sure.

    She provided me with a box of receipts that her dad had saved from coin purchases. He bought both of these coins in October 1972 and paid $19.95 for the 1878-CC and $119.50 for the 1890-CC. The closest reference book I have to that date shows that he may have even overpaid for the 1890-CC!

    Though, from the enlargements posted partway upthread, the 90 looks like a considerably stronger strike. Is that characteristic of the vintage?
