We are fortunate to have a most reliable one. I asked him the other day if the PO ever considered community mailboxes for all neighborhoods. Like the ones seen in apartment complexes etc. Surprisingly, to me at least, he said the PO has thought about it in the past. Older neighborhoods are grandfathered in so for them that idea ended there. But with more and more complexes being built we will see more of these community mailboxes. Anyone else here ever hear of this idea being considered for all neighborhoods across the board?

For new developments (businesses in strip malls, as well) I've seen them popping up.
When I worked at the PO in the early 90's, NDCBU's, which the delivery units are called, needed a consensus of residents in the proposed area to be installed. Occasionally you'd get one or two dissenting votes which negated installation. I don't know if that still applies nowadays.
At military installations overseas, its the norm.

For village neighborhoods, that will be a 'no-starter'. People like their mail in the box at the porch. Cheers, RickO
Yes, it's common practice here in certain areas of Colorado. Usually they are placed midway down a street, and twenty or so houses will have a box in that larger mailbox. There is often a larger locked box at the bottom for packages that don't fit in the smaller individual slots.

We've had such a "cluster box" setup since I moved into new construction (in DC) in the mid 1990s. One thing worth mentioning is that there have been several reports of mailmen being held up and their ring full of "master keys" being taken, forcing them to have to re-key many many cluster boxes. With any innovative solution there comes a new set of risks.

In this area every new housing development back to the mid 90's has used these cluster boxes, there are pros and cons to them over the mailbox at every house.
