This one was left alone, thankfully.

These were plated and not very well for that matter. Shame on the people that did this!

Plated (reprocessed) steel cents were made in large numbers not all that long after the coins were in circulation. The plated pieces were available for a premium at least as early as the 1960s and were still commonly seen in the 1970s. Why would someone do this? Well, to most folks the reprocessed (plated) steel cents are more attractive than an original EF coin and, as an added bonus, folks could make money by marketing them.

There are literally millions of the steel cents, if cleaned or damaged just pass them on.

I see uncirculated sets on ebay well priced all the time.

@ERingus .... I agree with your designated 'cleaned, left alone, plated'. Years ago, I purchased new rolls of 1943 cents. One roll I opened, one I have not. The opened roll has beautiful, as minted cents - I believe the unopened roll will be the same. The steel cents do seem to degenerate fast in circulation. Cheers, RickO

In the 50's and 60's I saved them all and just dropped them into a model wooden boat I had. Used them as keel weight. Gave the boat away with all the steelies in it years later. Never checked or looked at them.....
