POLL: Do you think that this 1853 half cent is a PO1, FR2, or AG3? Found in a quarter roll!

numismanumisma Posts: 3,877 ✭✭✭✭

This coin would normally be just another coin for the early copper bin, but it has a funny backstory. We purchased several rolls of 90% silver from another dealer recently. I was spot checking them to make sure that they were silver when I ran across a weird roll that had foreign coins, some clad, a few silver quarters and then this neat half cent. We priced the roll accordingly and both parties were happy.

    I think it’s a FR2.

Probably spent a lot of time at the local mercantile.

I would agree with the F2... with the cautionary statement that I am not very good at these low grades. :/ Cheers, RickO

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and opinions. I am also in the FR2 camp.

Was kinda hoping for a PO1 so that I could submit as a "lowball" candidate. I think that there are too many PO1 braided hair half cents to make it a worthwhile endeavor, so I will just keep it as raw.

Not eBay. This coin came out of a roll of silver quarters. Well, it was a partial roll with a lot of things in it, including world coins and this neat little half cent. I bought a 90% deal from another local dealer, we emptied all of the rolls into the counter and this one has not supposed to be in there. I went ahead about bought the miscellaneous stuff. I figured this coin at $20, so it was a good deal.

In my mind this is a 2. But if a TPG has the goal of tagging it with the highest possible grade, it would be a 3.

So you are saying that I should put this in my pocket for 10 years to get it down to PO1? Too much work.

Just kidding. I know what you mean and kind of agree. If we want our MS65 Morgan to grade 66, it will come back 65. If we want our half cent to grade PO1, we will get FR2 or (shudder to think) the dreaded AG3..

Think of all the transactions and pockets that's been in, it has been around. But it still has that nice brown color every copper guy likes.

Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.
