...Is any provenance known for this coin beyond Simpson?
I found this other PF68 which indicates there's a PF69* CAM out there...

Went to see on CoinFacts if there was any clues to indicate if The NGC PF-69 CAM* was the same coin. Could not find any info on that.
Did find that the listed auction record for an 1878 Proof Trade (under non-Cam) of $120,750 PR68 01-02-2006 Superior Galleries was for the now PCGS Proof-69 Cameo when it was listed as PCGS Proof-68. Picture matches lot 653 here:
