Kind of a cool tester. But I think it should only be used on junk silver or gold just because I don’t know if it damages whatever your testing.

Well, I would not be whacking coins together like that, especially soft PM's... Plus, my hearing is excellent, however, I could not detect the 'ringing' he referred to... Cheers, RickO
I actually own one--and I can tell you that it works pretty well (although mainly for larger coins) and if it weren't a little overpriced I would recommend it as an easy quick test for junk silver (and nicer stuff if you are careful).

I have done many a ring tests on a piece of glass or a piece of marble without damaging a coin, with good results.
That's why many older cash registers had a marble ledge over the cash drawer so the merchant can drop a suspicious looking coin on it and listen for a melodious ring or a dull thud.

I just balance a coin on the tip of my finger and lightly tap it when a pen or pencil. Probably works better than that thing if you have a finely tuned ear. I have never hurt a coin doing that either. Ting!
Edit to add...if you want to test your ear get some 500, 800, + 900 fine coins and listen for the difference in pitch.
