Toned Peace dollar, Market Acceptable?

Came across this highly priced raw toned peace dollar. And was curious to learn if people think if this is NT or AT? Market acceptable? Will it slab?
I know those colors are worth a premium, and if slabbed this would be worth way more, but this one is so crusty and parts of the reverse are so far black crust that I think it won't straight grade.
However was curious to learn more experienced collectors thoughts.

I wouldn't expect it to straight grade.

Looks XF'ish (based mainly on the reverse). It probably won't straight grade and not necessarily because of the toning. Looks 'damaged' to me (perhaps over an old cleaning too).

    Steer clear of that one

I don’t personally think it’s NT, I think it would grade details environmental damage. Even if it did straight grade I don’t think it is worth nearly what they are asking for it raw.

Here’s a crusty toned example in my collection for comparison’s sake.

Not much eye appeal. Eagles face seems to have damage and who knows what else is going on under the "toning". I would agree with a details grade at the best.

XF details grade with ugly toning on a common date. Worth melting.

It looks environmentally damaged to me. Hard pass.

I would pass that one very fast.... Looks like environmental damage or a unbelievably bad job of AT.... I think it would get a details grade.... and that asking price is ludicrous. Cheers, RickO

Doesn't matter. It's terminal either way. The asking price is ridiculous.

i’ve never seen an XF with details like that, before. And since even culls bring over melt value, it would be foolish to melt it.

Original or not, so much looks so dark/deeply toned that I think it’s on the verge of environment damage. One way or another, the coin looks very unlikely to straight grade in my opinion.

I think it’s a bit of a weak strike combined with deep toning and poor lighting. The coin looks uncirculated or, at worst, high AU, to me as fas as details go.

I was basing my "XF'ish" opinion on the reverse (as stated).

Give me a blast white any day - I’ve never been a toner fan but my local coin guy saws rainbow toning in peace dollars is rare and almost always AT.
    It’s just not for me

@braddick that reverse and also the many marks on the obv. Just an overall bad coin that somebody will spend too much money for.

I think it is ugly. I am not sure if I would pay much of a premium for that, but to each their own.

It looks NT to me, but it's gotten to the point of being damaged. Asking $1400 for this corroded silver is as ludicrous as asking a coin dealer to give you a free $20 Saint at a coin show.

Not worth anywhere near $1,400. The reverse looks horrible, so not worth much more than melt IMO.

Seller states their opinion is AT in the description. At least they’re honest! (It’s not mine).
It’s much better than XF details in my opinion. I can see the reverse is a baggy mess and appreciate that sentiment though. Still it has higher details grade - if that matters, which it barely does- given that 22 P’s are incredibly common.
Personally, I think it a poor example of AT.

He stated he didn't know if it was AT. Also said he doesn't know if it's a matte proof!

Given his knowledge to use the term matte proof, my guess is that he tried it at a TPG and it came back details - now he'll see if someone else will give it a try.

OP - there a very few bargains in numismatics. If you want a toned Peace, buy one already slabbed. :)

    Yes. I stand corrected.
I didn’t read his description carefully enough and missed the “if” in this coin is artificially toned.
That’s what I get for looking at this stuff before my morning coffee ;-)
    Sorry.
The description isn’t as honest as my first impressions implied.
But, it is just opinion I suppose, though I very much disagree with it.

Would be a foolish gamble at 1/10th the price IMO.
