Without investigating further, the distance between the fake 9 and fake 1 is too wide although it seems tighter than the usual alertered counterfeit
An obvious altered date.
An authorized PCGS dealer, and a contributor to the Red Book.
That was my problem with this one, but I concluded that the mint mark is to far to the right to be genuine and that the mint mark font is not correct for the 14.
Then in that CLOSEUP image its looks possible (????) some tooling going on in the area where the designer's initials would be on the 44.

"run away, run away!"
Wow, that one's pretty obvious.
You can still see the remnants of the altered 4.
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
Wouldn't that be something to have a '44 struck on a steel planchet and then altered to '14 D?
The first photo gives that impression.
When I was first staring collecting in early 1962 I was offered one of those. I quickly spotted it as a fake. Those were the days when young collectors could attend their local coin club and learn a great deal of information about coins very quickly. The adult collectors were very helpful.
It amazes me that those fake "1914-D" cents still fool some collectors. The decline of local coin clubs may be a reason why.

WoW!
Seems we have some very welcomed forum members in this thread that I've not seen in any of mine before!

Thanks for you comments and your time, its a group effort in getting as many of these phony coins out of circulation as possible.

I believe your profile picture (avatar) comes from the days of "Is It Live, or Is It Maxell"

The pictured coin looks like it may have been patinated in a attempt to hide the work done on the date.
I'm surprised the listing is still up?
We might need help reporting it!

Reported.
Pretty obvious fake.... Moving right along on this snowy, Sunday morning.... Cheers, RickO
Seller ended the auction.
As I understand it, it took some extra levers to get this one pulled.
But, it was still from this group effort!
In just a couple of days,
We found & exposed a Ebay China source,
Got their counterfeits removed,
Got 2 14-D listings removed!
Thanks Everyone

Rather like throwing bowling balls uphill... they keep coming back. Still, gotta fight the good fight.
I wish there was a way to penalize the sellers enough to actually discourage this.
