1982 Small Date Penny?

Hi all! I'm 95% sure what I found is a small date penny, but wanted to get a second opinion from some more experienced folks. The two is further away from the rim than a 1982 penny I compared it to, and the font seems different. Can anyone confirm? Thanks!

    Chances are, you did. The Mint made Billions of both the large dates an small dates. The rare one is the 1982-D copper small date.

    Also, it is, in fact, a Denver mint small date.

    Is it a copper planchet or copper plated zinc planchet?

    You may want to do a little research on the differences. Come back with any questions

    I don't have a coin scale, just a food scale that only measures in whole grams. Are there any visual methods of identification?

    Yes, but it takes some time to learn the difference and you can't always tell.

    Yours appears to be a zinc planchet. ;)

    Now look at your coin and see if you can figure out why it's zinc. ;)

    This post prompted me to look closer at a penny that had been set aside in the collection. I knew about the large date/small date thing but not the zinc/copper difference. I ordered a scale a few minutes ago and will know the answer Monday. It's a small date but some in this thread seem to know the difference between zinc and copper via pics. Also, I haven't taken an interest in the Lincolns yet but this one seems to have character; particularly the cheek bone. Grades and guesses at R, RB, B would be appreciated. Because I like it, I will probably slab at some point. Any comments appreciated.

    I am no coin expert but I’m pretty sure that this is a small date Lincoln cent and if it is made of copper it will weigh approximately 3.11g, but it is from the Philadelphia mint So it’s value is nowhere near great enough compared to the price you will pay to slab this coin! Even at a MS 65 grade your talking like 55 cents! What I cannot answer is why the 1982-D Small Date Copper and the 1982-P Small Date Copper are so far apart in value! I absolutely have no clue!

    THE ONLY THINGS I’M GREAT AT ARE BEING A FATHER TO MY SON CALIBER, HUNTING, AND FISHING! OTHER THAN THAT I NEED A YOUTUBE VIDEO TO TEACH ME LOL!! 🤣😂🤣😂

    A 1982 P S.D. could be on either copper or zinc.
    The 1982 D S.D. was only with zinc but a few were made with copper planchets in error. This is the one you want to find.
    Your coin is a P so it is not the big money one.
    The coin & the photos don't show any real "tells" about if it's copper or zinc.
    Your coin is circulated and there is no point in grading it, it's worth a penny graded or not.

    You’re correct about the pictured coin being a small date example. And because it’s a 1982, not a 1982-D, it’s worth just 1 cent. The huge value disparity between the small date 1982 bronze and 1982-D bronze is due to the former being readily available in large quantities, while there are only a couple known examples of the latter.

    Red Book doesn't list a 1982 D small date in Copper. Too few to even print stats I guess.

    I did notice it. I took a closer look and this is on the edge in that area. PMD I'm sure but I thought actually seeing the layering was kinda cool.

    Excellent clarification on the large/small date issue with mm information. I did not realize how scarce the small, copper D was.... Cheers, RickO
