Date Restoration on Old Wheat

Hi everyone,

I have an old wheat from the 1910s, but the last digit of the date is very faded and impossible to read under all kinds of lighting. Is there any way I can restore this date at all to any kind of legibility? Anything I can find online is just talking about nickels/Nic-A-Date. Are there any methods that you know that could potentially help make the date legible? Thanks!

Any method you use will destroy the coin value. Acid (nic-a-date) can work but it is NOT recommended.

It is what it is, a very worn cent-with character.
Any type of alteration would be like forgery- tooling and very wrong.
Accept it as it is and move on.

If you post a picture (both sides) it is not impossible that someone here will be able to recognize die markers and be able to definitively ID the date.

The penny is obviously very corroded, so I'm not sure if anyone can identify it, but worth a try I suppose!

Forgot to mention: The pictures obviously aren't as detailed as the real thing, but I'm thinking maybe either 1911 or 1917?

You can etch copper with acid also. If it dissolves nickel, it should dissolve copper. I use straight acid from lab. I haven't actually tried nic-a- date. You might have to dilute it a bit or keep it on for less time.

It's not a magic solution. It is just different dissolution rates based on differences in metal strain.

Whatever you decide to use, don't waste time with this coin. Whatever the last digit is, the coin is worth 2 cents. You could go to your local coin store and buy every Philly mint Lincoln from 1910 to 1919 in that condition for $1. Keep looking and enjoy the hunt.

The first picture looks like 1918.... However, we really need larger, more focused pictures....The pictures are too small , too far away. Cheers, RickO

I'm not trying to prepare it to sell, I just want to know where it will go once I get some coin folders. If it devalues it a little, then so be it. I just want to know when it's from.
