I paid $40 for this 1935 S Peace$-how did I do?

I picked this up last year and wanted a Peace $ other than the 22's and 23's I had. The price seemed fair and the seller's pics were fair, so I bought it. How did I do? Go ahead and let me have it, if bad I'll sell it when silver goes up.

A space filler at best. Way too many small marks for my taste.
Not a disaster, but for $40 you could do better.
Trade up later when price go up, jmo

I like it well enough by the fact I had never had one and it and the 21, which I've had plenty of, were the only ones with 4 rays under the ONE. If I wanted it for an album, AU58 would have been my selection, but just bought it for the heck of it.

I was just told it looked to be a VAM4 Doubled Reverse so I will enlarge it to see.

I like the 35s and this one is XF grade it appears so 40 is a fair price. If you can find the 34S, then even better!
The 34 and 35 Peace series is readily available in circulated condition but is among the toughest dates (especially the 34S) in uncirculated and or BU GEM condition. Right now I’m searching hard for a 34 P and S in MS condition that won’t rob the bank and it’s been a long journey that is still going on and on...
The enlarged pictures probably enhance the nicks on the coin so 40$ was probably an average price for the coin. Give it an acetone soak to see if the black spots come off. Like previously stated - an average album coin.

Is there any way to conserve the coin that would pull the spots off?
I'm curious about those later date Peace dollars in the middle of the Great Depression.
I have several coins which I plan on placing in an acetone bath, but probably in March when its a little warmer in the garage. That's not that far away.

The coin has two different problems. The first is an abundance of small nicks and dings on both the obverse and reverse. Nothing can be done about those.
The second problem is the black marks. Those marks almost look to be raised above the surface of the coin and may be some sort of sticky residue rather than toning. The coin is not particularly valuable so some careful experimentation with a Q-tip dipped in Goo-Gone or even dishwashing soap might remove them. A close, in-person look at the coin will be needed to determine just what the dark marks are.

People want $30 for ordinary Peace Dollars these days (such as circulated 1922-1923 coins).
So $40 for a 1935-S (with extra ray) in low AU grade is not bad.
Not a bad price, it is an album grade coin and could use an acetone soak to remove the surface stuff. Cheers, RickO
