Damage-free way to mount a gold quarter eagle?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,702 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was talking to a friend today who expressed interest in making a necklace from an Indian quarter eagle, but she doesn’t want to damage it, whether with the mount itself or having it end up polished. I suggested she may need to speak with a jeweler to make something custom, but I thought I’d ask here in case someone knows of a product that already exists. I imagine it would be similar to a small air-tite but with glass instead of plastic, a gold edge/loop, and ideally thinner.

What about those thin snug fitting Kointains? Are they thin enough to fit into a bezel? Just change out Kointains as needed when they get too scuffed up? Seems like anything glass would be too thick or if thin too fragile.

That could work. I’d be afraid they could be a bit weak, though, and there could be a risk of them breaking and the coin getting damaged or falling out. I’ve seen them before, but they’ve always been secured in a flip.

Yes, Kointains and a bezel is what I was going to suggest also

it's rough. I'd think any container for it would have a "damaging-if-broken" danger.

Then there is glare off of it.

Use an AU coin and a bezel.

If done correctly with the correct size a screw top bezel won't damage it. I've removed over a dozen over the years that didn't suffer any damage from the bezel.

And does the bezel protect the surfaces from polishing and hits?

Of course not! If the intended wearer is so concerned about damage I would say that's unlikely to be an issue! :p

A screw top bezel with crystal container (think watch crystal, for durability) would work just fine. Cheers, RickO

Watch crystals come in a bazillion sizes and 2 of those should work, then pick the bezel that encompasses that sandwich. I see piles of watch crystals at the flea market all the time. Peace Roy

Similar to PerryHall’s joke about wearing a slab, I saw a popup ad from this company https://patuga.com/ . They make necklaces that have a coin capsule on a black square that look like they would protect the coin really good. Sort of a cross between a colored 2x2 and an airtite coin capsule. Only they sell bullion coins in the capsules, I’m not sure if the capsules open up and you can put in other coins or not. But might work really good at making a coin necklace that protects the coin

If you really want to use glass some of the compact flashlights have a glass lens.
Good chance you could find something at Harbor Freight or a similar store.
It may be the least expensive source for small round glass. ;)

I think a Kointain would work great as others have mentioned.

I passed these ideas along to my friend. I think the watch glass idea is most popular thus far, and she will talk to a jeweler about making a damage-free mount with the glass and a bezel that holds it together. Appreciate the ideas!
