Just a nice, frosty Carson City Morgan in a Doily Holder…

Came across this coin yesterday and it put a smile on my face. I got it at a Bay State show in college… probably 2007. I think I knew about doilies back then, but frankly I was just excited to get a lustrous and frosty CC dollar. I may have one other CC coin somewhere, but this is the one I always remember I have.

Love the holder, but in all honesty I'm a bit surprised it straight graded with that scratch on the rev.

@airplanenut .... You have a wealth of great coins....I find it hard to believe I have not commented on any before... I have followed you on this forum even before you moved to Seattle... and I was working there at the time. I should note that a CC Morgan always gets my attention, especially one as nice as that one. Cheers, RickO

I don’t have a glass to get a better look, but it’s really light. If it catches the light as it did in the photo you’ll see it, but it’s a hairline. As it is, it didn't even do anything to the leaf it goes through, which is more like what you’d see with die polish (not saying this is die polish, but any significant scratch should continue through a device when it appears in the field on both sides.

    Only because it's a NO Toner! :D
Seriously, beautiful coin all around. The holder is second to none.

I see those as clash marks. The big scratch looking mark on the left is the profile of Liberty's nose isn't it?

I thought it could be that, too, but without a loupe I can’t quite see it well enough to say one way or the other. The bottom half is slightly split which seems a bit less like a clash, but the lack of a scratch through the leaf is something more likely to be in the die.

The clash is strong in this one obi-wan.

Does not look like a clash mark and from what I can see in the photo it looks incuse (into the coin). However Jeremy has the coin in hand and says the mark is raised, if that is true then it would not have affected the grade like a scratch would.

I didn’t say it’s raised. I think it’s slightly incuse, but it’s thin enough that I can’t be certain without a glass, and I don’t have one on me.

Such a frosty specimen is definitely an appropriate posting for the season. Fits well with the holiday music to include "Frosty the snowman."

Prior to the GSA sales, this would have been one of the most expensive of Morgan Dollars! But, don't we just love the GSA coins??
