Gorgeous Toned 1925 Peace Dollar on Legend Auctions

Options

This is an amazing 1925 toned Peace Dollar for sale at Legend ending this week. Graded PCGS 64 CAC. Coin has fabulous color for a peace dollar. Any guesses for final hammer? Has anybody seen one toned this nicely before?

The slab shot in the auction and the TrueView look rather different. The slab shot makes it look a little on the crispy side. Fun coin, but not one for me.

This is one of those rare times the coin looks better in hand than the TrueView shows.

I'd like to know the lighting setup to get the toning to light up like that.

1925 are hard to find toned. This is wildly toned. For someone creating a set, this is a tough coin to find.

I like the toning on this one. Its a little dark and I would like more luster. However, you cannot compare it to a 22, 23, or 24 which are far more common. Compared to other 25 its probably the best toned example Ive seen.

I'd like to know how and where this coin was stored for 90 years?
It's not roll-end or album toning.
Maybe in a paper envelope or a leather pouch?

    What a beautiful coin.

My opinion is that the coin will look different in hand. I've said before (and was laughed at for my comment) that truviews are like glamour shots and may not always reflect the true look in hand. I would think the slab shot pic is more accurate.

My opinion is this is a dark coin lite up nicely with the expert imaging. I wouldn’t expect it would be that attractive in hand. I like it to a degree but it’s too wild for my taste.

In this day and age, that coin should also be represented with a short video clip as well as images. We do that on Instagram all the time. You can tell very quickly if a coin has killer luster or is just a dull silver disc.

The obverse ruins it for me. If the obverse were neutral in eye appeal, I might like it a bit more. Would pass on that coin.

Rainbow toning (that is natural) is super rare on peace dollars - I really like it personally although I don’t collect them!
I collect flash white peace dollars with thick luster but I do appreciate legitimate toned peace dollars in general, because they can be interesting. I’ve noticed toned Peace dollars tend to often be S mints ... but that may just be my experience and not a real situation.

I don't have any coins quite that dark but do have a few that in average room lighting look lifeless but when you turn up the light become alive with color. This is one of the reasons I asked about the lighting used to photograph this coin.

San Fran MS examples are actually difficult to find with attractive toning. Try finding a 34-S with great color. Ive come across less than 5. And I bought the one I could afford.

The 22, 23, and 24-Ps are the ones with the most attractive toning since they have the highest mintage numbers and probably because its not that expensive for a doctor to keep trying to AT common dates.

Or rather than the same coin doctor, a similar set of conditions which led to the coins toning naturally.

I don't like this one that much. Too overboard with color saturation makes it look AT, even though it's MA.

You never know unless you're in the know. As shown with a previous "monster " toned 1925 peace dollar, this one could've also gone from questionable to ms64 to ms64+ to ms64+cac.
Obviously it's not going to be a bank breaker for whoever buys it, but be realistic if you personally do not know the full history of where this coin came from.

The colors in the TV look off to me and I'm not much of a fan of the pattern. I imagine that they'll look a bit different with some lustre showing, but even still, while the color is highly unusual for a Peace dollar, I can't say I really like the coin. NT or AT doesn't really matter... I'm not bidding.

Obviously its difficult to tell from photos but the obverse looks 100% NT. Honestly, the obverse is not that attractive.

So for those who are saying the coin is AT your premise is that a doctor took a coin with a fairly unattractive obverse and replicated the colors on the reverse in hopes the coin would grade ?

Or the doctor tried to AT the obverse - didnt do such a great job at creating an attractively toned obverse - but instead of trying a different coin, he just flipped it over and AT the reverse as well ?

    Neither really make sense.

The photos are far more colorful than the coin in hand. Dark bronzes and golds are not unusual colors for toned Peace $ Neither are dark greens and reds. I have no doubt that this coin is 100% NT. For $4100 this might be a case of someone buying the photos and not the coin.

Already $4100 bid plus juice for a common Peace $ it has to close to done. Those (almost) never look as good as the picture. You end up twisting and turning under 10 different lights to replicate the color then you can say “ there you go it really does look like that”. Don’t people realize there are real coins “worth” that much ?

The scratch across "in God we trust" and same area on the reverse is not as easily seen with all the toning. Odd how it's on both sides in the same area.

It cannot be posted right now as it's not provided by the auction service.

I do hope that they post both sides of the slab one day, like all other major auction services.
