1948 Jefferson nickle

Can anyone please explain the looks of this coin? It appears to be the same type of metal as the nickle itsself.

    Perhaps solder, but it also looks like it might be old, ancient glue.

    Weigh it. If it's over 5 grams solder is your answer.

    On the reverse is some substance bonded to the surface

    Jefferson looks like abraded away

    While the pictures are helpful, you might want to crop them... and then just pick a few that highlight the coin.

    It appears that someone attempted to solder a pin/clasp to the reverse of your nickel. You could try acetone to see if there are any organics present. It will not harm the nickel and it will not remove solder. Cheers, RickO

    Beside the solder - just wear on the obverse - maybe somebody needed a spacer of some sort

    It is not magnetic. I believe solder would be magnetic
