Post your coins from France

Several price guides... for post-1795 coins, I like using Le Franc by DESROUSSEAUX, PRIEUR and SCHMITT . For Royal Coins, I would say there are several - I am less familiar with this area, but have heard that Les monnaies royales francaises by Clairand and Prieur is good for them. there are numerous other specialist guides, for various types of both silver and copper/bronze feudal coins, Roman coins struck in Gaul, etc. as well. I may post some coins shortly, but unfortunately sold most of my best pieces (numerous gros tournois from St. Louis to Charles VI, along with gros from several cities/bishops) several years ago when money was tight! I also had a really nice branch mint decime overstruck on a 2 decime with nearly all details of both coins still present...

Here is a rare Merovingian coin, in the name of Ebroin, presumed to be the Ebroin who was mayor of the palace of Neustria in the 7th century.

The mayors of the palace were the main power in late Merovingian times, with the "Roi fainéant" (do-nothing kings) as figureheads. Eventually one mayor, Pepin "the short" would kick aside the last of the Merovingians and become king himself. His son, Charles, later known as Charlemagne, would be a legend.

Per Grierson in MEC:1, only two coins in the name of Ebroin were previously documented, both in national collections of France and Germany. None of the other mayors of the palace seem to have issued coins in their names, though there are some deniers that have been possibly assigned to Charles Martel or Pepin before he became king.
