Picked up the Dick Osburn 1844 SLD

Only 50 1844 Seated Liberty Dollars are known in ALL MS grades at both PCGS and NGC combined. Many HAD to have been resubmissions, so even that tiny number is likely inflated.

The NGC Census for the 1844 Seated Dollar in MS 61 is just 9/8 with 5 in MS 62, 2 in MS 63 and a single (1) coin in MS 64 with NONE finer!

The 1844 is a super-low mintage issue with ONLY 20,000 circulation strikes, all from the same die pair. It is also one of the most interesting issues for its many die anomalies.

The ONLY MS 62 that has sold in recent history was from the 'Hilt Collection'. It has smoother fields but it is dark and dull in color.

The present example is a bright and lustrous with pale-gold toning and Prooflike field qualities.

It also is OC Die State b/b. A Top-30 Variety. Misplaced digits 1 and 8 in the gown folds are readily visible with a loupe. The obverse is die doubled, where doubling within the shield creates sharply defined "quad stripes". Double die clashing exists as well, although the dies show no signs of lapping.

The strike is a bit soft, at the left-hand stars, the left edge of the rock base, and at S in STATES and the nearby eagle's left-facing shoulder.

It's also a centerpiece of the Reference Collection and an OC plate coin in the work: "Liberty Seated Dollars: A Register of Die Varieties", by Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing.

I know that it’s not perfect but it has tremendous absolute and condition rarity.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

    Nice coin, congrats!

Anyone heard from Dick Osburn of late.

I really loved his CBH collection.

Very knowledgeable and congenial man. His wife was always with him at the shows as I recall.

This type of MPD has been observed on a few half dime varieties as well, and probably on other denominations.
I could post a few photos....

Impressive addition to your collection! I like the '44s too and have 2 of them, an AU and a VF that's close to EF; but MS is out of my league!

Those "quad stripes" is reminiscent of the 1873 with arrows quad stripes doubled die obverse half dollar, which is many times more common than that outstanding dollar.

Really well done. Any 1844 in MS is super tough to find in quality. You have done it sir. You are assembling a really nice seated dollar collection, such a tough challenge. Keep going!

I just realized that I never replied to this thread. I want to thank everyone for all of the positive remarks and encouragement. I am becoming somewhat of a Seated Dollar geek! LOL I have been reading up on them and searching for them, all over the internet. I am captivated by their beauty, history and scarcity. I wasn’t really looking for this date, in particular, but just happened to come across it. When I researched it, I found out how truly scarce it really was. I figured that it was a good buying opportunity, as the price was $400 below NGC retail.

Sooo, now I have a serious question.......

    Let's crunch some numbers.....Shall we? :)

The 1893-S Morgan Dollar has a mintage of 100,000. There are 7146 in all grades at PCGS and 38 in all PCGS MS grades. There are 3496 in all grades at NGC and 28 in all MS grades at NGC.

That is a total of 10642 in all grades and 66 in all MS grades from BOTH services.

Price is $250K in PCGS 61 and $210K in NGC 61.

The 1844 Liberty Seated Dollar has a mintage of just 20,000. There are only 331 in all PCGS grades and 30 in all PCGS MS grades. NGC has only 178 in all grades and 20 in all NGC MS grades.

That is a total of 509 in all grades and 50 in all MS grades from BOTH services.

Price is $5000 in PCGS 61 and $4750 in NGC 61.

    WHY the HUGE price disparity??

As much as I can appreciate the Morgan Dollar series....are there really THAT many more Morgan collectors out there than Liberty Seated collectors?? I think that BOTH are STEEPED in HISTORY and, quite frankly, I like the Seated design a bit better, myself.

Is there something that I am missing??

    Please enlighten me. ;)

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Considering there are 94 PCGS Registry Sets of Seated Dollars and over 5,000 Registry Sets of Morgan Dollars, I would say "Yes."

yep, it's a popularity contest. To the benefit of those who collect SLD's.
