Encased cent dies with an example of the encased cent

Over on the BST forum @mustanggt is selling some dies that were used to strike encased cents and tokens.
I had asked him if he could look through his large inventory to see if he had any matched pairs. He came up with a pair of dies used to make encased cents for a congressional campaign in Virginia.
I tracked down Virgil Goode, the former congressman who had issued the encased cents and I asked him if by any chance he had an example he could send me. He very generously sent me one, along with details about the issue (made in 1998, 1000 issued).
I bought these dies to help illustrate the minting process, especially in regard to encased cents. It is really special to be able to have the full set of dies and coin, and it was great to be able to put the encased cent on top of the die and feel it snap into position when the details lined up.

Yes, the cent gets sealed inside that aluminum ring when it is struck and the ring expands under the pressure of the dies. You could pop it out if you pushed hard enough but otherwise it is in there for good.
Often/usually there is slight damage to the edge/rim of the coin from being struck in the encasement where the die might overlap the coin a bit.
We occassionally see those here on the forum. So, no matter how tempting, it is best to not try remove a coin. Once encased, that is the new purpose of the coin.

There seems to be an alarmingly low amount of current information on the internet about encased coins with the closing of sites and manufacturers in recent years so I'm glad someone is picking up the torch.
And might I add your timing is impeccable as was Virgil's.
I remember getting my first encased cents in the 1950's. The motto was always "Keep me and never go broke" I know many of them had the cent popped out and traded for penny candy and pixie sticks (nothing makes you go hyper faster than 5 cents worth of pixie sticks).
This is a very interesting subject and I've joined your list. I'll see if my wife can dig out some of my old ones and take a picture for me (I don't see well enough to do it myself).

The ironic thing is, until the manufacturer went under, I don't think these types of dies were really available anywhere. Even the issuing person/organization had no access to the actual dies.
Their misfortune has opened up a new area of exonumia collecting.
