Of course you shouldn't handle the coins or currency much... Or at all. Probably should put the coins into flips or 2x2s.
We all started somewhere. Sometimes you have to dabble before you figure out what your real interest are. All the U.S. coins could be a starting point for a collection. Depending on your budget you can select a series and figure out which grade would allow to to complete the set within your budget. At the same time you can focus on the series, learn the nuances of grading, variations strike and other details the differentiate if date and mint mark.

@JTMcC.... Welcome aboard... Nice start to your collection.... Old U.S. coins are really nice. Nostalgia for me, since those were in common circulation when I was a kid..... Well, IHC's were not super common, but did show up in change. Good luck... Cheers, RickO

That’s a good start! You’ll find what speaks to you and keep growing your collection. It’s ok to like a lot of different kinds of coins and it’s ok to focus. A lot of us have gone back and forth over the years and I’m sure you will, too, as you continue in the hobby.
