This coin straight graded, I would think details, scratched. Am I wrong

PCGS G6 straight grade. The scratches are not hidden and to me very prominent. Should this have gotten a details grade or am I being over picky with the scratches? Do you think the rarity of the coin or maybe the submitting party might have had something to do with it grading the way it did.

    Wear and tear on a key date Buffalo nickel.
    I don't have a problem with it straight graded.

    It’s a G6 and the scratches are not shiny. I expect it would straight grade 99% of the time. 1% left for the day it gets graded on a Monday when it’s raining and the graders collectively ran out of breakfast.

    Is that a 1916 DDO? It's hard to tell with that much wear on the date. Grading services should be consistent in their grading standards within a coin series without regard to rarity IMO.

    Agree that this coin should have gotten a details grade with a "SCRATCHED" notation on the slab label.

    I've seen worse straight grade. Looks like a few little scratches instead of one big ugly one. I am ok with the grade.

    That coin is a toss up for me.... I guess, if it is a 1916 DDO, I would try to get it graded... and be happy with a straight grade, but not surprised if it details.... Cheers, RickO

    That coin is a toss up for me.... I guess, if it is a 1916 DDO, I would try to get it graded... and be happy with a straight grade, but not surprised if it details.... Cheers, RickO

    It is the 16/16. Another appearance here by the coin I got for 15 cents and sold thru GC. Personally, I thought it was a G4 and was surprised at the grade it eventually received. A few scratches on a coin that age and condition can be expected, especially since they aren't across the key diagnostics, feathertips, ribbon braids or date,.

    G-4 at best is my assessment. AG-3 is more like it. The scratches don't bother me too much but there should be more date present on a G-6, in my opinion.

    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

    Whoever sent this coin asked for the opinion of PCGS...they got it. Those who gave their opinion had the coin in their grasp and they were the ones who agreed on the condition.

    No way I would buy this coin as a G-06 at it's attendant significantly stiffer price than if it was rated G-04 which is closer to reality, in my opinion.

    this is one of those coins where ownership/buying/selling influences the opinion, even though I'm confident most won't admit that. in the end, though, does it really matter?? the coin "is what it is" and should be marketable as such either in/out of the PCGS holder.

    Yes it is. The doubling can also be seen on the feathers and ribbon. A date is not needed on these.

    I am guessing that with those scratches it will not be sold at full G6 price.

    On second thought, that coin should definitely be body bagged, there is wrapping machine damage in addition to the horizontal scratches.

    the straight grade doesn't bother me much, but the grade appears too high given the inability to see much of the date. I would think it would trade for 3 or 4 money.

    If you want an example, buy it. If you want a nice example, keep looking. If you ever want to sell it, the scratches will come up, and the price will be lowered accordingly.
