In another thread, the OP asked about this coin below, and was assured it is a fake.
Do the fakes often have convincing wear? (Not saying this one is convincing or not... just askin')

    Yes.
Wear is added to make the coin look old.
    Scratches are also added.
They do this to hide the fact that it is a fake.
    Its called eye distraction.

Is it often credible, authentic-looking, hard to tell from the real deal?

Research the grades by our hosts.
Learn what to look for in grade differences by viewing the true views and other articles on what makes this coin a fake.
Knowledge is power especially on raw coins.

When the lockdown started, was trying to teach my then fourteen year old about the various methodologies of how to identify fakes etc. and came across the perfect example to drive home the point.
Found an 1887 CC Morgan dollar for sale on eBay and it was truthfully listed as fake since there were no Carson City Morgans minted in 1886, 1887 or 1888.
Picked it up for 15$ and the weight was very close, it was non-magnetic and passed the ping test.
Was worth the investment since it was a great learning tool for my kid to identify from the denticles, the mint mark positions etc.

The fakers will try anything to separate you from your hard earned money. Buyer beware.
