Winner or Loser ? (uncertified auction purchase via photo only) [in-hand pictures added]

I saw this listed on an internet auction site (not eBay) and I placed the winning bid. The seller's picture is below. This was the only picture provided and there was no picture showing the reverse. With the buyer's premium, the net total I paid was $242. There was no description given, other than the "VF" grade written on the holder.

I will post photos of the coin I received, once people have had a chance to comment (guess).

I suspect it's a very flattering photo of a VF coin. I hope not.

Notorious for weak strikes, my guess is a CAC gold sticker for that flip.

Probably a poorly struck AU. I think you overpaid, unlike most of the rest of the posters. Poorly struck coins do not excite me even if they are "scarcer" dates.

I don't know, that might be an UNC. Really tough to tell from that photo.

Interpreting the photo, I will say it is some level of Uncirculated with a weaker than usual central strike. That flatness led someone to undergrade it.

Looking at how high the current prices are, that would make it a winner for now.

Definite winner, Dan. I've been on the hunt for a reasonable '21 Peace for months and there just is no such thing.

Is that a rim issue between L & I of 'LIBERTY'?

Comparing the hair lines outside edges, disregarding the weak strike, I think the coin would grade XF45 obv unless the crescent line in the left field thru the lip and cheek is a problem. I can't tell from the pic what that is, whether toning or what. If XF45, you should at least break even after grading fees. Has an upside if the luster is as good as I think it might be inhand AND if the reverse is as good or better it could garner a AU grade and its winner, winner chicken dinner.

I like it. The strike is just average, there are very few contact marks and nice luster. I think there’s light rub on the cheek and hair above the forehead, so AU58.

  • It looks uncirculated to me but could be AU58 as Portross stated. My only concern would be the rim between L and I. Maybe its not that bad!

Looks better than a VF to me. It has that typical weak strike at the center hair detail, which is why they graded it VF.

I'm not sure I'd call that strike below average. It's not strong, but I think it's at least your typical strike for a high relief. I've seen plenty that are notably weaker. Nice coin!
