Are Etsy Coin Listing Prices some kind of joke?

I dont go on ETSY at all. Especially for coins. That being said I could not believe my eyes for the asking price for common US coins especially the hideous Susan B Anthony. RARE -- :D

You can ASK anything you want.

Whether you can actually SELL it for that amount is the question.

I like the price $ 27,707.63 - the 63 cents to express authenticity ! also lots of odd numbers... hmm? an enigma for mathematicians.

Is this particular coin made out of unobtanium?

Quite the scam attempts they have going on, though someone did mention that perhaps some of the ridiculous scam pricing on Etsy was trying to take in suckers but it could also be a way to do some money laundering. I have no idea at all, but it did seem interesting and gave me an idea for a short story to work on at some point.

maybe the price was supposed to be $2.77 (shipping included), but some keybounce added something...

Yes, its a real problem, I get 4-5 calls a day wanting to sell there face value coins for these prices. In fact, just today, a lady drove 1.5 hours to sell her small bag of wheat cents for thousands of dollars, cause she saw on itsy where they are worth that much, took me for ever to convince here its not false info.

Yes, the Etsy postings are often "wishful thinking" in the worst way. They unfortunately can mislead people who are happy to hear that their face value or $2 item is supposedly very valuable.

Then, they call me and say they have the coin that is on Etsy for $10,000, wow!

    For money laundering.....
Bank: Where did this deposit greater than 9999 come from? ( for federal money laundering reporting ).
Launderer: Online sale of goods. Now there is a legitimate paper trail.

Tons of coins on ebay with similar listings. Quick story, my Mom, Sister and Cousin were having a 3 day yard sale and on the 3rd day decided to go to lunch and asked my sister's 12 year old son to watch the sale for an hour or so. They came back and he had sold nothing to which my Mom said, "just no body looking, huh?" Scot said, "Oh yeah plenty of lookers, just no body interested." When they began looking at then new price tags, they noticed $2 items marked $200 and so on for most of the items. Scot said, "Oh yeah, I figured if we only sold one item at my prices it would be better than selling 10 at your prices."
So the crazy auction prices may be in this line of thinking. sell one and be done.

Was that before or after you don't go on Etsy? Especially for coins :D . But really, it's been like that for years, the asking of high prices for ordinary coins. Throw the bait out there - eventually Jeremy Wade catches a monster fish!

Are there any examples showing actual sales at those levels or are there only unsold high prices?

Lots of uninformed people trying to find more uninformed people. It is called capitalism.

Snake oil falls in that category. Capitalism works because of the freedom to claim most anything and ask your price. Now that said. The townsfolk usually had a pretty good way of dealing with it. Buyer be ware. 2000 years ago the Romans recognized this. Others probably long before then. Any wisdom that has been around that long. There just might be something to it
(. Please, I’m sure my condensation of capitalism is simplified and open to many editorial opinions. I think it’s ok for this example)

I handle many of these types of calls each week. I’m now telling them to email the lister offering them their “rare” coins.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
