Beautiful rainbow toned 1922-S Peace Dollar from the $30 bin

OmegaraptorOmegaraptor Posts: 541 ✭✭✭✭✭

Had a great trip to the LCS today. Picked up an 1896-O Barber Half for $10, an 1867-S half dime for $25 (damaged but will sell on Ebay for a good bit more than that), and a worn 1836 Bust Half O-105 R-4 for $25.

Ended up spending a bit more than I had planned to, however, because right as I was paying something caught my eye in the Peace Dollar bin. Every coin was pretty much untoned except this one. I went over to take a look, and this is what I saw:

One of the most beautiful toned Peace Dollars I've ever seen! The photos don't do this one justice. The obverse is beautiful with sharp rainbow colors around the rim, yellows turning into a rainbow at the edge. Very nice obverse luster as well. Reverse shows that the coin was probably taped into something containing sulfur at some point, maybe an album or coin board. My photos make the lower part of the reverse look black but there are rainbow colors there too, with the rock being covered in blue and purple hues that just don't show up here. Might have to take another picture and post it later on.

    Nice-looking Peace dollar.
    Should sell nicely on eBay.

Great pickup. You’ll definitely make money on that one. I love picking toners out of 90% bins.

The toning is pretty splotchy. It has some big scratches on the obv and rev. I don't know if you can make a profit on it. I hope you got a good price anyways.

Nice detail on the strike, but too many scratches on the obverse image for me - plus the blotchy tarnish, but that could be removed. Cheers, RickO

To me that is the poster child for needs a dip. I love tarnishing on coins but it must be attractive.
Just a thought. That’s not rainbow toning? Last I checked a rainbow 🌈 had color.
    $30 is not a bad price 🤓

    Ugly toning pattern.

The obverse may dip ok, but think the reverse will not come out well. Beautiful rainbow toning and Peace dollars are 1 in a million. For $30 you did ok and if you like it, even better.

People’s standards go right out the window when it comes to peace dollars. I agree with the dealer

The coin has a small area of attractive color. It has a much, much larger area of dark, splotchy toning and some scratches. I think we have different opinions of the definitions of the words rainbow and beautiful. Attractive toned peace dollars are difficult to find. That doesn't mean that any toned peace dollar that is found is attractive.

Thanks for your opinion everyone. Yeah I was exaggerating with my opening post, lol. I guess I just really like the toning on this one but I could understand why many wouldn't.

Can't say any Peace Dollar for $30 is a bad buy. Toning isn't exactly my main collecting focus so I never spend too much of a premium on it, but if it's cheap and I like the toning, might as well add it to my collection.

I'm not crazy about the toning ... however ... I still like the coin.

I'm not going to pile on over the toning and scratches, but for $30 it's not all that bad... it actually has a decent strike for the issue.

Maybe use this piece to refer back to, along with the comments, before making your next purchase...

I can only say that your concept of beautiful and mine are very different. ;) Having said that there is a key for every lock and if you like it then for the $30 you are good.

Not too bad for toning on a Peace dollar. Though I probably won't label it as "One of the most beautiful toned Peace Dollars I've ever seen!".... but if it is to you, then an excellent find. And an 'S' mint to boot!

Truth be told Peace Dollars aren’t really what I collect... and I have by no means looked at a lot of Peace Dollars. So I made an impulse buy and may have overstepped my knowledge on this series - and that’s fine. I have a nice reference piece now at the very least.

For 3o bucks, you did fine. You just can't apply Morgan dollar toning standards to the Peace dollar series. The obverse appears to have some color flash and it being a 22-S doesn't hurt.
