They did in fact finish just one game ahead of the Dodgers. Have I (or the others here) left out any other pennant (pre-1969) or division (1969-93) races in which the winner was one game or less ahead of the runner-up?
I have a ball signed in person from Bobby Thompson.... " The shot heard around the world 🌍!" Lol, he put that on the ball also. Giants won the pennant... Giants won... Lol
Now all you need is to get the guy who was waiting on deck to sign it too!
So I've been reading my local newspaper archive for 1991 (30 years ago just like Back to the Future!) and the 1991 NL West had the Braves and Dodgers tied with their last three game series to go (and the Braves were down 9.5 games at the All-Star break). Maybe not one of the greatest pennant races but certainly a pretty good one.
I thought I'd bring this topic back up in light of the ridiculous three wild cards per league (what a joke...) and apparently now no more one game playoffs in the event of a division tie? Let's go back to the days of REAL pennant races.
1964 St.Louis Cardinals. Won pennant on last day by 1 game over Phil's and Reds. Then capped that feat off with a 7 game World Series win over the NY Yankees.

Poor Phillies...blew a 6 1/2 game lead with 12 games to go...and they almost blew the 1950 race also! Only a win the last game of the season saved them from being forced into a three game playoff with, you guessed it, the Dodgers.
@Maywood said: they just barely missed in 1997 though.
I've seen you post this stat before, have you forgotten about 2014 vs. the Cubs??
That's 2016 and my grandpa was dead at that point. And I finally got around to posting the 1949 AL race...where there any others that ended in a "double elimination tournament final"? That is, in the last two games where the first/second place teams played each other, one team was one game up on the other one, so they only needed to win once to win the pennant/division while the other one had to win twice.

So 1938 remains under your radar?
That would be really unfortunate...
