Is this the finest 1901-S Barber Quarter for an Everyman Registry Set?

Out of the 11 Au's I feel this is probably the nicest. There is a 58 in the POP report that several of us Barber folks have been trying to locate for over a decade! If anyone knows where the 58 is please let us know! I think the coin is now in a 62 holder myself. This coin also has more eye appeal IMHO than the last few MS's to sell from the pictures I have seen.

Needless to say I am thrilled to acquire this coin for my set at what I consider a heck of a price. I was on the phone during the auction figuring it would cost me a minimum of 10K more to get! My jaw hit the floor at the same time the corners of my mouth nearly touched my eyeballs when the hammer fell!

These are not glamour shots. In hand without a loop the coin looks MS. Here she is!

Looks pretty good from here. More mint luster would be nice but I like it.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

It's there, as I said these aren't glamour shots.

Are the scratches on the obverse of the coin or on the plastic holder? If on the coin there are more marks than I like to see on a coin of that grade.

    All glory is fleeting.

They are on the coin but accented by the way I take pictures. Light hairlines look like scratches!

    amwald,
glad to see you got it. I too was surprised at the hammer, thought it would go much higher. Like mentioned in an earlier thread, it sold a few years back for a lot more. It is a lot nicer IMO than the other 2 55's, the old jack beymer coin, and the one that the 2 dealer " that are brothers" had, (I cant remember their names, one was from Pa, and the other Tenn).
    anyway,

I have never seen the 58 either, I have herd that walt has seen pics of it as well long time back. The one ngc 50 that vern's buddy got crossed a few years back Is a nice l coin , but technically not in mid grade au . My coin was decent, however some on here didnt care for it, although cac liked it, and so did jason carter.

I sold just about all of my stuff earlier this year thru GC, just case I didnt have much time left, so they would be disposed of properly. Now finding out, should be around for a while longer. When i saw this coin come up, I thought about giving it a chase, but decided against it, as having an ample amount of cash might serve me better for the shop, with potentially two large six figure deals coming my way momentarily.

from this same sale, I did re-aquire the 70-cc quarter I used to own , as i said I would go after it if it ever came back up, and thankfully due to stacks sh11ty pics, was able to get it at a lot better price than I expected on it. Just as nice as I remember it, when I sold it 15 years ago. Came in today, Ill keep it as a momento, the proceeds from selling it intially gave me the funds to open the original shop, and hadnt had to work a regular job since.

If I recall, Walt couldn't confirm if it was the 58.

How is that only a 55? Well it's solid for the assigned grade, according to a well respected expert. Congratulations!

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
  • A few years ago I hooked up a client of mine with a PCGS AU55. We’ve been looking for the 58.

    That's not a quarter! ;)

Several years ago a friend sent me his Everyman set of Barber halves. I thought this PCGS AU58 was deserving. Very flashy and wholesome.

Curious if you have heard or found out anything about the 58 in your search?

There are at least 2 AU's on the market right now. Go look at some auction archives and you can find most of them.
