This 1801 is the representative example of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type in my dime collection. I bought this coin from Jonathan Kern in 1988 and it is till raw after all these years.
One of the characteristics of this variety is that star 4 is always very weak or missing, as can be seen in this example.
I am very interested in hearing your grading opinions and comments.

Thank you!

I quite like the original look, even wear and lack of problems, none of these are typical characteristics of the type. In terms of wear, I'd call it a nice VF. Very high grades for eye appeal and few in this grade look this nice.

Love the look. Great piece. I'd say VF+

XF all day, most likely 45 but I would need to see it under a light to tell the difference between 40. Your dimes are quite nice, well assembled collection back when there were way fewer guard rails to protect collectors

Looks XF40 to me. Love it.

Certainly looks XF to me... likely 40....a bit too much wear for 45.... Cheers, RickO

Looks like a very nice 40 coin.

It's a nice coin. I like the surfaces and color. Reverse looks XF to me but not the obverse.

You’re right of course if going by wear /strike detail but it could be graded by surfaces too as the crudely made early issues are all over the place even in mint state, doing that i could see it as a 45. Interpretation of the protected areas / photo make me think the Obv is just weakly struck and their might be remaining mint surfaces here or there which would total grade it at the 45 level. If classic pearl grey and tone then 40 would be appropriate IMHO

Another lovely coin with an outstanding original look. Extremely Fine IMO, the obverse strike weakness appears characteristic, as others have mentioned and appears to be wear to those less accustomed to grading early US issues.

Thank you, friends, for your comments and grade opinions. This is very helpful for me in trying to decide which coins in my collection to submit to PCGS one day.

If you look very closely you will notice two very thin hairlines scratches running across the bust below Miss Liberties' throat.
They are very thin and sometimes hard to see unless under intense light, but do you think this would be an impediment in grading it without a 'details' designation?

    Thank you!

That coin should have no problem getting into a straight grade holder. On these early issues they are much more forgiving.
